Ishta Devata is your personal chosen deity — the divine energy most aligned with your soul's purpose and path to liberation (Moksha). According to Jaimini astrology, it is determined through the Atmakaraka (the planet with the highest degree in your birth chart), its position in the Navamsa (D9) chart, and an analysis of the 12th house from the Karakamsha Lagna.

We use the authentic Jaimini Karakamsha method: (1) Find your Atmakaraka — the planet with the highest longitude in degrees among the 7 classical planets. (2) Locate that planet's sign in the D9 Navamsa chart — this is your Karakamsha Lagna. (3) The 12th house from Karakamsha reveals the Ishta Devata. Planets placed there (in D9) determine the deity. If no planet occupies that house, the sign lord rules.

In Jaimini astrology, the 12th house represents liberation (Moksha), surrender, and the dissolution of the ego. The deity who governs this house in relation to your Karakamsha Lagna is the specific form of the divine through which your soul seeks liberation. This is why the 12th house — not the 1st or the Moon sign — is used for Ishta Devata.

Atmakaraka literally means "significator of the soul." It is the planet with the highest degree in your natal (D1) chart among the seven classical planets (Sun, Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus, Saturn). This planet carries the most karma from past lives and governs your soul's primary lessons and spiritual journey in this incarnation.

When multiple planets occupy the 12th from Karakamsha in D9, classical Jaimini tradition prioritises them in the following order: Ketu > Jupiter > Venus > Moon > Sun > Mars > Mercury > Saturn > Rahu. Ketu and Jupiter are the strongest Moksha indicators. The highest-priority planet determines the primary Ishta Devata.

Your Ishta Devata derived from the Jaimini Karakamsha method is fixed by your birth chart and does not change. It reflects a permanent karmic signature. However, different deities may be propitiated during specific planetary periods (Dashas) for remedial or devotional purposes.

If no planet occupies the 12th sign from Karakamsha in the D9 chart, the lord of that sign becomes the Ishta Karaka. For example, if the 12th sign is Sagittarius and no planet is there, Jupiter (lord of Sagittarius) rules — pointing to Lord Vishnu or Narayana as the Ishta Devata.
