    What Is a Kundli?

A Kundli is a map of the sky for the moment you were born. It records the Ascendant, or Lagna, along with the signs and houses occupied by the planets. In Vedic astrology, these placements are read together rather than one at a time.

The date alone isn't enough to make the chart. Birth time affects the Ascendant and house positions, while the birthplace supplies the coordinates used in the calculation. That is why two people born on the same day can still have different charts.

How to Generate Your Free Kundli on GrahaDisha

    1. Add your name and gender. Your name is used to label the chart.
    2. Choose your birth date. Use the date shown on an official record if you have one.
    3. Enter your birth time. Try to be as precise as possible, especially if your birth was close to a change of Ascendant.
    4. Choose your birthplace. Select the right suggestion from the list so the tool receives the correct coordinates.
    5. Select “Generate My Kundli.” The calculated charts and tables will open on the same page.

The 12 Houses of Your Birth Chart

The chart has 12 houses, known as Bhavas. Astrologers traditionally associate each one with a different part of life:

1st House — LagnaPersonality, physical appearance, confidence, life purpose.
2nd House — Dhan BhavaWealth, family, savings, speech.
3rd House — Sahaj BhavaCourage, siblings, communication, short travel.
4th House — Sukha BhavaHome, mother, property, emotional peace.
5th House — Putra BhavaEducation, creativity, romance, children.
6th House — Shatru BhavaHealth, debts, competition, discipline.
7th House — Yuvati BhavaMarriage, partnerships, spouse.
8th House — Aayu BhavaTransformation, longevity, hidden matters.
9th House — Bhagya BhavaLuck, higher education, father, dharma.
10th House — Karma BhavaCareer, status, authority, public image.
11th House — Labha BhavaIncome, gains, social circle, ambitions.
12th House — Vyaya BhavaSpirituality, expenses, foreign settlement.
    PlanetSignifies
    SunAuthority, confidence, father, leadership
    MoonEmotions, mind, intuition, mother
    MarsCourage, action, discipline, siblings
    MercuryCommunication, intellect, business
    JupiterWisdom, wealth, spirituality, expansion
    VenusRelationships, beauty, luxury, creativity
    SaturnKarma, discipline, delays, responsibility

A planet isn't judged from its name alone. Its sign, house, relationships with other planets and the running Dasha all affect how an astrologer would interpret it.

D1 (Lagna) Chart vs D9 (Navamsa) Chart

The D1, or Lagna chart, is the main chart and the usual starting point for a reading. The D9, or Navamsa chart, is a divisional chart traditionally consulted for marriage, dharma and the underlying strength of planets. The D9 adds context; it doesn't replace the D1 or make sense in isolation.

    Understanding the Vimshottari Dasha Sequence

Vimshottari Dasha is a 120-year sequence of planetary periods. A Mahadasha is divided into Antardasha, Pratyantardasha and still smaller periods. Astrologers use this timeline to discuss when themes seen elsewhere in a chart may become more noticeable.

Here you can expand the sequence down to Sookshma and Prana. These are traditional astrological periods, not a guarantee that a particular event will happen on a particular date.

Ashtakavarga — Scoring the Strength of Every House

Ashtakavarga is a traditional points system used to compare signs and houses. Instead of reading a transit on its own, an astrologer may look at its Ashtakavarga score alongside the birth chart and Dasha. A higher score is generally read as more supportive, but it is only one part of the assessment.

Common Doshas Checked in a Kundli

Mangal Dosha is checked from the position of Mars in relation to the Ascendant and, in some traditions, the Moon and Venus. Astrologers also look for cancellation conditions before reaching a conclusion.

Kaal Sarp Dosha is commonly described as a chart in which the planets fall between Rahu and Ketu. Definitions vary, so it should be checked using a clearly stated rule instead of treated as an automatic sign of hardship.

Pitra Dosha is a traditional idea connected with ancestors. Different schools use different combinations involving the Sun, Rahu, Ketu and the ninth house.

Shani Sade Sati is the period in which Saturn moves through the sign before the natal Moon, the Moon sign itself and the following sign. It lasts roughly seven and a half years and is interpreted from the full chart, not from the label alone.

How to Get the Most Accurate Kundli

Use the most reliable birth time you can find. A birth certificate, hospital record or a family record is better than a guess. If you only know an approximate time, keep that uncertainty in mind when reading the Ascendant, houses and timing periods.

Also avoid drawing a conclusion from one placement or one divisional chart. A traditional reading compares the main chart with the relevant divisional chart, Dasha and transits before forming an interpretation.

Method and limitation: The calculator converts the submitted birth details into chart data and applies Vedic astrology calculations to display placements and timelines. Output quality depends heavily on the birth time and selected place. Astrology is an interpretive tradition, not a scientifically proven method of predicting events; use these results for reflection and guidance, not as a substitute for medical, legal or financial advice.

How Your Birth Data Is Handled

Your birth details are submitted privately by POST and exchanged for a random, short-lived result reference, so your name, date, place and coordinates do not appear in the result URL. Anonymous result data remains in the server session for up to 30 minutes. For convenience, generated Kundlis may be saved in your browser for up to 90 days, or in your GrahaDisha account until you delete them from “Previous Kundlis.” The calculation service receives the numeric birth date, time and coordinates needed to create the chart; it does not receive the name or birthplace text from this page.

    Frequently Asked Questions

What is a Kundli in Vedic astrology?

It is a birth chart showing the Ascendant and planetary positions for the time and place of birth. Vedic astrologers read the signs, houses and planets together when interpreting it.

How is a Kundli generated by date of birth and time?

The calculator uses your birth date, time and the coordinates of your birthplace to calculate the Ascendant and planetary positions. Those positions are then arranged into the signs and houses shown in the chart.

How accurate are the Kundli calculations?

The calculated chart can only be as reliable as the details entered. An incorrect time or birthplace can change the Ascendant and houses. The interpretations come from astrological tradition and have not been scientifically validated as predictions.

What details are required to create a Kundli?

You will be asked for a name, gender, birth date, birth time and birthplace. The time and selected location are especially important because they affect the Ascendant and house positions.

Can I make a Kundli without an exact birth time?

Yes, but treat the result cautiously. An approximate time may produce the wrong Ascendant or house placements. Check official or family records first; birth-time rectification is another option offered by some astrologers.

What is the difference between the D1 (Lagna) and D9 (Navamsa) chart?

The D1 is the main birth chart. The D9 is a divisional chart used to add context, particularly in readings about marriage, dharma and planetary strength. It is normally read alongside the D1.

What is Vimshottari Dasha and why does it matter?

It is a 120-year sequence made up of planetary periods and sub-periods. Astrologers compare the active period with the rest of the chart when discussing timing. This tool lets you view the sequence down to Sookshma and Prana.

What is Ashtakavarga in a Kundli?

It is a traditional points system used to compare the relative support available to different signs and houses. The scores are usually considered together with transits, Dasha and the main birth chart.

What are the common doshas checked in a Kundli?

Common checks include Mangal Dosha, Kaal Sarp Dosha and Pitra Dosha. Sade Sati is also often discussed, although it is a Saturn transit rather than a birth-chart dosha. Rules vary between traditions, so the full chart and any cancellation conditions matter.

Is Kundli making free on GrahaDisha?

Yes. You can generate and view the D1 and D9 charts, planetary table, Nakshatra, Ashtakavarga and Vimshottari Dasha without paying.
