A Kundli is a snapshot of the sky at the time and place you were born. The diamond-shaped D1 chart is only the picture. Behind it sit the rising sign, the house each planet occupies, every planet's degree and Nakshatra, and the Dasha periods worked out from the Moon.
You can't make a proper Janam Kundli from the birth date alone. The time and place fix the rising sign and the houses, so two children born on the same day in different cities, or a few hours apart in one city, can end up with different charts.
No. The same document goes by different names depending on who you ask. Janam Kundli and Janam Kundali are the usual spellings across much of north India. Janam Patri or Janam Patrika is what many families say at home, especially in Hindi-speaking households. Jatakam and Jathakam are heard across the south, and English-language astrologers tend to say Vedic birth chart, natal chart or simply horoscope.
Regions differ mostly in drawing style; the astronomy is the same. A newspaper "horoscope" is something else: a general forecast for everyone born under one sign, while your Kundli is built from the exact minute and place you were born.
GrahaDisha creates this Kundli using Swiss Ephemeris with the Lahiri ayanamsa. The chart uses whole-sign houses and the true lunar node for Rahu; Ketu is placed 180 degrees opposite Rahu. Vimshottari Dasha starts from the Moon's Nakshatra position. See Astrodienst's Lahiri sidereal ephemeris reference for more about this setting.
If your chart differs from one on another site, check these settings first. Raman, KP or a tropical zodiac can give different degrees, house cusps and Dasha dates from the same birth details.
The chart on this page is drawn in the North Indian style, the familiar square divided into diamonds and triangles. In that layout the houses stay put and the signs rotate around them. The first house is always the diamond at the top centre, and the sign number written inside it tells you which sign is rising.
| North Indian style | South Indian style | |
|---|---|---|
| Layout | Square split into 12 diamonds and triangles | Grid of 12 boxes around an empty centre |
| What stays fixed | The houses (1st house is always top centre) | The signs (each sign always has its own box) |
| Where to find the Lagna | The top-centre diamond | The box marked as the Ascendant |
| Where it's popular | Mainly north and west India | Mainly the southern states |
Neither style is more accurate. Both carry the same information.
The chart has 12 houses, known as Bhavas. Astrologers traditionally associate each one with a different part of life:
Astrologers rarely read the twelve houses one at a time. They sort them into families, because the family a planet sits in says a lot about how forcefully it can act.
| Group | Houses | Traditional reading |
|---|---|---|
| Kendra (angles) | 1, 4, 7, 10 | The pillars of the chart: self, home, partnerships and career. Planets here tend to be conspicuous. |
| Trikona (trines) | 1, 5, 9 | Supportive houses connected with merit, learning and fortune. |
| Dusthana | 6, 8, 12 | Houses of struggle, upheaval and loss. Planets here get extra scrutiny, though they are not automatically "bad." |
| Upachaya (growth) | 3, 6, 10, 11 | Houses where results are said to improve with time and sustained effort. |
These are traditional classifications and schools differ on the finer points. No house is good or bad in isolation; what matters is who occupies it, who rules it and which Dasha is running.
Every house in your chart is filled by one of twelve signs, called Rashis, and each sign has a ruling planet. The ruler matters because a planet's strength is judged partly by whose sign it is standing in. Vedic astrology uses the sidereal zodiac, so the signs here can differ from the ones in a Western horoscope.
| # | Sign | Sanskrit name | Ruling planet | Element |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Aries | Mesha | Mars | Fire |
| 2 | Taurus | Vrishabha | Venus | Earth |
| 3 | Gemini | Mithuna | Mercury | Air |
| 4 | Cancer | Karka | Moon | Water |
| 5 | Leo | Simha | Sun | Fire |
| 6 | Virgo | Kanya | Mercury | Earth |
| 7 | Libra | Tula | Venus | Air |
| 8 | Scorpio | Vrishchika | Mars | Water |
| 9 | Sagittarius | Dhanu | Jupiter | Fire |
| 10 | Capricorn | Makara | Saturn | Earth |
| 11 | Aquarius | Kumbha | Saturn | Air |
| 12 | Pisces | Meena | Jupiter | Water |
Ask three astrologers "what's my Rashi?" and you might get three answers, because three different signs are in play:
A simple way to keep them straight: the Lagna gives the chart its layout, the Moon sign gives it its timing, and the Sun sign is the one you mostly meet at parties.
| Planet | Vedic name | Traditionally signifies |
|---|---|---|
| Sun | Surya | Authority, vitality, confidence, father, leadership, government |
| Moon | Chandra | Mind, emotions, intuition, mother, comfort, public connection |
| Mars | Mangal | Energy, courage, drive, siblings, land and property |
| Mercury | Budh | Speech, intellect, learning, trade, analysis |
| Jupiter | Guru (Brihaspati) | Wisdom, teachers, children, wealth, faith, growth |
| Venus | Shukra | Love, marriage, beauty, art, comfort, creativity |
| Saturn | Shani | Discipline, hard work, delay, responsibility, service |
| Rahu | Rahu (north lunar node) | Ambition, obsession, foreign matters, sudden rises, unconventional paths |
| Ketu | Ketu (south lunar node) | Detachment, spiritual insight, withdrawal, past-life karma (traditional) |
A planet's meaning depends on more than its name. Its sign, its house, the other planets it touches and the running Dasha all change how an astrologer reads it.
Rahu and Ketu are not bodies you could point a telescope at. They are the two points where the Moon's orbit crosses the Sun's apparent path, known as the north and south lunar nodes, which is why Ketu always sits exactly opposite Rahu. Eclipses happen near these points, and that's a big reason Jyotish treats them as powerful.
The zodiac is also divided into 27 Nakshatras, or lunar mansions, of 13°20′ each, and every Nakshatra splits into four padas of 3°20′. Your birth Nakshatra is simply the one the Moon was crossing when you were born. It matters for two practical reasons: it sets the starting point of your Vimshottari Dasha, and it's the traditional basis for the first syllable of a baby's name.
The Moon covers roughly 13 degrees a day, so it takes about a day to cross one Nakshatra and about six hours to cross one pada. That's why a few hours of error in birth time can change your pada, and if you were born near a boundary, your Nakshatra too.

Notice that the lords repeat in one fixed order (Ketu, Venus, Sun, Moon, Mars, Rahu, Jupiter, Saturn, Mercury) three times around the zodiac. It's the same order as the Dasha sequence, which is why knowing the Moon's Nakshatra immediately tells you which Mahadasha you were born into.
Start with the D1. It is the main birth chart and shows the twelve houses used for an overall reading. You can also explore the Vedic birth chart and divisional charts separately. The D9 is a divisional chart traditionally consulted for marriage, dharma and the underlying strength of planets. A common beginner's mistake is to read the D9 as a second horoscope. Use it to check what you already see in the D1.
Here is a practical order for working through the report:
Why an exact birth time matters: suppose a written record says 6:10 AM, but 6:10 PM is entered by mistake. Slow-moving planets may still appear in the same signs, so the chart can look believable, but the Ascendant and house layout may be entirely different. If your time is approximate, treat conclusions about houses and event timing as approximate too.
When your report loads, some planets carry a small marker next to their name. Here is what each one means.
Use these markers as prompts to look closer. A retrograde Saturn or a combust Mercury still has to be read with its house, sign and Dasha before anyone draws a conclusion.
Vimshottari Dasha is a 120-year sequence of planetary periods. A Mahadasha is divided into Antardasha, Pratyantardasha and still smaller periods. Astrologers use this timeline to discuss when themes seen elsewhere in a chart may become more noticeable.
The Dasha tab lets you expand the sequence down to Sookshma and Prana. These are traditional periods, and no event is guaranteed to fall on a given date.
Every Mahadasha has a fixed length, and together the nine add up to 120 years. You don't start at the beginning of the cycle. You start in the period of whichever planet rules your Moon's Nakshatra, with only the unspent part of that period remaining.
| Order | Mahadasha lord | Length | Nakshatras it rules |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Ketu | 7 years | Ashwini, Magha, Mula |
| 2 | Venus | 20 years | Bharani, Purva Phalguni, Purva Ashadha |
| 3 | Sun | 6 years | Krittika, Uttara Phalguni, Uttara Ashadha |
| 4 | Moon | 10 years | Rohini, Hasta, Shravana |
| 5 | Mars | 7 years | Mrigashira, Chitra, Dhanishta |
| 6 | Rahu | 18 years | Ardra, Swati, Shatabhisha |
| 7 | Jupiter | 16 years | Punarvasu, Vishakha, Purva Bhadrapada |
| 8 | Saturn | 19 years | Pushya, Anuradha, Uttara Bhadrapada |
| 9 | Mercury | 17 years | Ashlesha, Jyeshtha, Revati |
A worked example (illustrative numbers): suppose the Moon is at 5° Aries at birth. That falls in Ashwini, which Ketu rules. The Moon has covered 5° of Ashwini's 13°20′, or 37.5%, so 62.5% of Ketu's seven-year period is still left. That's about 4 years and 4½ months of Ketu Mahadasha at birth, after which Venus's 20-year period begins. Everything else in the timeline follows from this one starting calculation.
Inside each Mahadasha, the sub-periods use the same proportional rule. In the 20-year Venus Mahadasha, the Venus Antardasha lasts 20 × 20 ÷ 120, or about 3 years 4 months. The Sookshma and Prana levels you can expand in your report divide time the same way.
Ashtakavarga is a traditional points system for comparing signs and houses. An astrologer may check a transit's score alongside the birth chart and Dasha instead of reading the transit alone. A higher score is generally read as more supportive, though it is only one input.
A yoga is a specific planetary pattern that the classical texts link with a particular outcome. Your free report doesn't label yogas for you, but with the planet table open you can spot a few of the simplest ones yourself.
| Yoga | Basic condition | Traditionally linked with |
|---|---|---|
| Gaja Kesari | Jupiter in a Kendra (1st, 4th, 7th or 10th house) from the Moon | Good name, learning, steady support from others |
| Budhaditya | Sun and Mercury in the same sign | Sharp intellect and communication skill |
| Chandra–Mangal | Moon and Mars in the same sign | An enterprising, earning-minded temperament |
| Panch Mahapurusha | Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus or Saturn in its own or exalted sign and in a Kendra from the Lagna | A prominent trait tied to the planet involved (Ruchaka, Bhadra, Hamsa, Malavya, Shasha) |
| Raja Yoga | A link between the lords of a Kendra and a Trikona house | Position, recognition and authority |
This table is a vocabulary list. Whether a yoga actually delivers depends on the planets' strength, the Dasha running and whether something else in the chart cancels it. Budhaditya is a good example: it's extremely common, because Mercury never wanders more than about 28 degrees from the Sun, so having it is not remarkable by itself.
Mangal Dosha (also called Manglik Dosha) is checked from the position of Mars in relation to the Ascendant and, in some traditions, the Moon and Venus. The houses most often counted are the 1st, 4th, 7th, 8th and 12th, and some schools add the 2nd. Astrologers also look for cancellation conditions before reaching a conclusion, so a Mars placement alone settles very little.
Kaal Sarp Dosha is commonly described as a chart in which the planets fall between Rahu and Ketu. Definitions vary, so it should be checked using a clearly stated rule instead of treated as an automatic sign of hardship.
Pitra Dosha is a traditional idea connected with ancestors. Different schools use different combinations involving the Sun, Rahu, Ketu and the ninth house.
Shani Sade Sati is the period in which Saturn moves through the sign before the natal Moon, the Moon sign itself and the following sign. It lasts roughly seven and a half years and is interpreted from the full chart, not from the label alone.
Most people open a Kundli with a question in mind. These are the places astrologers traditionally begin. They are starting points for your own reading.
The most important input is the birth time. A birth certificate, hospital record or written family record is more useful than a time recalled from memory. If you only know an approximate time, remember that the rising sign and house distribution may shift. The selected birthplace matters as well because its coordinates are part of the calculation.
Don't draw a final conclusion from one placement or one divisional chart. A traditional reading compares the D1 with the relevant supporting chart, then looks at the Dasha and transits.
It happens all the time, particularly for people born at home, in small towns or before hospital records were routine. You still have options:
The chart is calculated from your birth details with Swiss Ephemeris, the Lahiri ayanamsa and whole-sign houses. How good it is depends mostly on the birth time and place you enter. Astrology is an interpretive tradition, not a scientifically proven way to predict events. Use the results for reflection, not as a substitute for medical, legal or financial advice.
Your birth details are submitted privately by POST and exchanged for a random, short-lived result reference, so your name, date, place and coordinates do not appear in the result URL. Anonymous result data remains in the server session for up to 30 minutes. For convenience, generated Kundlis may be saved in your browser for up to 90 days, or in your GrahaDisha account until you delete them from "Previous Kundlis." The calculation service receives the numeric birth date, time and coordinates needed to create the chart; it does not receive the name or birthplace text from this page.

It is a birth chart showing the Ascendant and planetary positions for the time and place of birth. Vedic astrologers read the signs, houses and planets together when interpreting it.
The calculator uses your birth date, time and the coordinates of your birthplace to calculate the Ascendant and planetary positions. Those positions are then arranged into the signs and houses shown in the chart.
The calculated chart can only be as reliable as the details entered. An incorrect time or birthplace can change the Ascendant and houses. The interpretations come from astrological tradition and have not been scientifically validated as predictions.
GrahaDisha uses Swiss Ephemeris with the Lahiri ayanamsa and whole-sign houses. Vimshottari Dasha is calculated from the Moon's Nakshatra position.
Enter your name, gender, birth date, birth time and birthplace. An accurate time and selected location are especially important because they determine the Ascendant and house positions.
You can enter an approximate time, but interpret the result cautiously: the Ascendant and house placements may change. Check official or family records where possible; some astrologers also offer birth-time rectification.
The D1 is the main birth chart. The D9 is a divisional chart used to add context, particularly in readings about marriage, dharma and planetary strength. It is normally read alongside the D1.
It is a 120-year sequence made up of planetary periods and sub-periods. Astrologers compare the active period with the rest of the chart when discussing timing. This tool lets you view the sequence down to Sookshma and Prana.
It is a traditional points system used to compare the relative support available to different signs and houses. The scores are usually considered together with transits, Dasha and the main birth chart.
Common checks include Mangal Dosha, Kaal Sarp Dosha and Pitra Dosha. Sade Sati is also often discussed, although it is a Saturn transit rather than a birth-chart dosha. Rules vary between traditions, so the full chart and any cancellation conditions matter.
Yes. You can generate and view the D1 and D9 charts, planetary table, Nakshatra, Ashtakavarga and Vimshottari Dasha without paying.
Neither is more accurate. Both styles show the same planets, signs and houses in a different layout, so use whichever you can read comfortably. The chart on this page is drawn in the North Indian (diamond) style.
A Kundli (Janam Kundali) is calculated from your exact birth date, time and place, and includes your Lagna, houses, Nakshatra and Dasha. A newspaper horoscope is a sign-based forecast written for everyone who shares a Sun or Moon sign, so it cannot reflect your individual chart.
In a North Indian chart, the diamond at the top centre is the first house, and the sign number written there is your Lagna. In this report you can also read it directly: the summary card lists your Lagna sign and Lagna lord, and the planet table includes an Ascendant row.
Both come from the Moon's position at birth. The sign the Moon was in is your Rashi, and the 13°20′ segment it was passing through is your Nakshatra. Because the Moon travels roughly 13 degrees a day, the date alone is not enough; you need the birth time and place too. Your report shows both.
Usually one of four settings differs: the ayanamsa (Lahiri, Raman or KP), the house system, whether Rahu is the mean or true node, or how the local birth time was converted to universal time. GrahaDisha uses Lahiri, whole-sign houses and the true node, so compare those first. Small differences in degrees are normal; a different Lagna sign usually means a different birth time or place was used.
Yes, if they were born even a few minutes apart. The planets barely move in that time, but the Ascendant degree, the D9 chart and the exact Dasha timing can all shift. That is why astrologers ask for the most precise birth time available.
Ketu 7 years, Venus 20, Sun 6, Moon 10, Mars 7, Rahu 18, Jupiter 16, Saturn 19 and Mercury 17, which adds up to 120 years. You begin in the Mahadasha of the planet that rules your Moon's Nakshatra, with only the unexpired balance of that period remaining at birth.
A retrograde planet (marked ℞) appears to move backwards against the zodiac when seen from Earth. It is an optical effect of orbital speeds, not a real reversal. In Jyotish, retrograde planets are read as strong but unconventional in how they act, and they are always judged together with their sign, house and Dasha.
A planet is Vargottama when it sits in the same sign in both the D1 (Lagna) chart and the D9 (Navamsa) chart. Traditionally this is read as extra strength for that planet. It is marked with a V in the planet table of your report.
The calculation itself, meaning planetary positions, Lagna and Dasha dates, can be just as precise as an astrologer's software, provided the birth details are right. What a consultant adds is interpretation: weighing the whole chart, the running Dasha and your circumstances together. This free report gives you the data and the explanation; a personal consultation is a separate step.
Birth details are sent by POST, so they do not appear in the result URL. Results use a random, short-lived reference, and result pages are marked noindex so search engines are told not to list them. Anonymous result data stays in the server session for up to 30 minutes.
Sade Sati begins when Saturn enters the sign before your Moon sign, continues while it crosses your Moon sign, and ends when it leaves the sign after it. Saturn takes about two and a half years per sign, so the whole spell lasts roughly seven and a half years. Compare your Moon sign with Saturn's current sign in the transit view of your report.
Your birth chart is fixed at the moment of birth and never changes. What moves is the timing layer: the Dasha period you are running and the day-to-day positions of the planets (transits) measured against your chart.
This page builds one person's chart. To compare two people, use the Kundli matching tool, which takes both sets of birth details and checks compatibility factors such as Guna Milan and Manglik status.
