Imagine a Kundli as a photograph of the sky taken at your birth—your personal time-and-place stamp. The familiar diamond-shaped D1 chart is only the visual summary. Behind it are the details used in a reading: the sign that was rising, the house occupied by each planet, its degree and Nakshatra, and the Dasha periods calculated from the Moon.
That is why a Janam Kundli cannot be made properly from the birth date alone. The time and place define the rising sign and the chart's houses. Two children born on the same day in different cities, or even a few hours apart in the same city, can have different Kundlis.
GrahaDisha creates this Kundli using Swiss Ephemeris in mode and the Lahiri ayanamsa. The chart uses whole-sign houses and the true lunar node, for Rahu. Ketu is placed 180 degrees opposite Rahu. These settings matter when comparing results with another calculator. A chart made with Raman, KP or a tropical zodiac can show different planetary degrees, house cusps or timing boundaries even when the same birth details are used.
The chart has 12 houses, known as Bhavas. Astrologers traditionally associate each one with a different part of life:

A planet isn't judged from its name alone. Its sign, house, relationships with other planets and the running Dasha all affect how an astrologer would interpret it.
Start with the D1. It is the main birth chart and shows the twelve houses used for an overall reading. You can also explore the Vedic birth chart and divisional charts separately. The D9 is a divisional chart traditionally consulted for marriage, dharma and the underlying strength of planets. A common beginner's mistake is to treat the D9 as a second, independent horoscope. It works better as supporting evidence for patterns already examined in the D1.
All the information can feel overwhelming at first. Here is a practical order for deciding what to look at:
Why an exact birth time matters: suppose a written record says 6:10 AM, but 6:10 PM is entered by mistake. Slow-moving planets may still appear in the same signs, so the chart can look believable, but the Ascendant and house layout may be entirely different. It would be a convincing chart for the wrong moment. If your time is approximate, treat conclusions about houses and event timing as approximate too.
Vimshottari Dasha is a 120-year sequence of planetary periods. A Mahadasha is divided into Antardasha, Pratyantardasha and still smaller periods. Astrologers use this timeline to discuss when themes seen elsewhere in a chart may become more noticeable.
Here you can expand the sequence down to Sookshma and Prana. These are traditional astrological periods, not a guarantee that a particular event will happen on a particular date.
Ashtakavarga is a traditional points system used to compare signs and houses. Instead of reading a transit on its own, an astrologer may look at its Ashtakavarga score alongside the birth chart and Dasha. A higher score is generally read as more supportive, but it is only one part of the assessment.
Mangal Dosha is checked from the position of Mars in relation to the Ascendant and, in some traditions, the Moon and Venus. Astrologers also look for cancellation conditions before reaching a conclusion.
Kaal Sarp Dosha is commonly described as a chart in which the planets fall between Rahu and Ketu. Definitions vary, so it should be checked using a clearly stated rule instead of treated as an automatic sign of hardship.
Pitra Dosha is a traditional idea connected with ancestors. Different schools use different combinations involving the Sun, Rahu, Ketu and the ninth house.
Shani Sade Sati is the period in which Saturn moves through the sign before the natal Moon, the Moon sign itself and the following sign. It lasts roughly seven and a half years and is interpreted from the full chart, not from the label alone.
The most important input is the birth time. A birth certificate, hospital record or written family record is more useful than a time recalled from memory. If you only know an approximate time, remember that the rising sign and house distribution may shift. The selected birthplace matters as well because its coordinates are part of the calculation.
It is also unwise to draw a final conclusion from one placement or one divisional chart. A traditional reading compares the D1 with the relevant supporting chart and then considers the Dasha and transits.
